چکیده

Studying the impact of operations, such as intersection and interleaving, on the succinctness of regular expressions has recently received renewed attention [12–14]. In this paper, we study the succinctness of regular expressions (REs) extended with interleaving, intersection and counting operators. We show that in a translation from REs with interleaving to standard regular expressions a double exponential size increase can not be avoided. We also consider the complexity of translations to finite automata. We give a tight exponential lower bound on the translation of REs with intersection to NFAs, and, for each of the three classes of REs, we show that in a translation to a DFA a double exponential size increase can not be avoided. Together with known results, this gives a complete picture of the complexity of translating REs extended with interleaving, intersection or counting into (standard) regular expressions, NFAs, and DFAs.

Efficient asymmetric inclusion of regular expressions with interleaving and counting for XML type-checking

The inclusion of Regular Expressions (REs) is the kernel of any type-checking algorithm for XML manipulation languages. XML applications would benefit from the extension of REs with interleaving and counting, but this is not feasible in general, since inclusion is EXPSPACE-complete for such extended REs. In Colazzo et al. (2009) [1] we introduced a notion of ‘‘conflict-free REs’’, which are ext...

Cuts in Regular Expressions

Most software packages with regular expression matching engines offer operators that extend the classical regular expressions, such as counting, intersection, complementation, and interleaving. Some of the most popular engines, for example those of Java and Perl, also provide operators that are intended to control the nondeterminism inherent in regular expressions. We formalize this notion in t...

Linear Time Membership for a Class of XML Types with Interleaving and Counting

Regular Expressions (REs) form the basis of most XML type languages, such as DTDs, XML Schema types, and XDuce types (Thompson et al. 2004; Hosoya and Pierce 2003). In this context, the interleaving operator would be a natural addition to the language of REs, as witnessed by the presence of limited forms of interleaving in XSD (the all group), Relax-NG, and SGML. Unfortunately, membership check...

Compressed membership problems revisited

Membership problems for compressed strings in regular languages are investigated. Strings are represented by straight-line programs, i.e. contextfree grammars that generate exactly one string. For the representation of regular languages, various formalisms with different degrees of succinctness (e.g. suitably extended regular expressions, hierarchical automata) are considered. Precise complexit...

On the State Complexity of Partial Derivative Automata For Regular Expressions with Intersection

Extended regular expressions (with complement and intersection) are used in many applications due to their succinctness. In particular, regular expressions extended with intersection only (also called semi-extended) can already be exponentially smaller than standard regular expressions or equivalent nondeterministic finite automata (NFA). For practical purposes it is important to study the aver...
